With the right application and service, you may call someone's phone from your PC. An application that makes this possible is Phoner. It looks very simple and lightweight on the surface, but you can find many features and options under its hood. Besides calling someone's phone, the software lets you create a phone book, set up automatic answers and much more.

Phoner is freeware and you can install it on your Windows powered computer in a few moments. There are no complex settings to make during the setup process, but you will have to specify your VoIP service provider and insert your log in credentials, when you run the application for the first time.

If the software is configured properly, you may call a person's phone right away, by typing the number in a text box, on the left side of the interface and clicking the Connect button, located on the toolbar. Alternatively, you can dial a number, by clicking different buttons, beneath the text box. The numbers you call are saved automatically and you can use the same text box as a drop menu, to select them.

When you call someone, an icon will appear in the central region of the interface, along with the phone number and other details. It is possible to call multiple persons at the same time and switch from one to another, by clicking their icons. You can organize contacts in a phone book, on a separate window. When creating a new contact, the software lets you specify his name, country and area code, besides the actual phone number. It is possible to insert announcement and ring sounds as well and set the program to answer automatically after a certain number of rings or reject the caller at all times.

A useful feature is the ability of importing contacts from MS Outlook or plain text files. Additionally, Phoner offers the possibility of configuring and activating an answering machine, record calls and play back recordings or other audio files. These features are configured on different windows and you can activate them with buttons, located in the lower left corner of the main interface.

Pros

You can organize a phone book and call phone numbers from your computer. Phoner's options are very flexible and it lets you customize almost any feature. It is capable of connecting to landlines, cellular networks and VoIP services.

Cons

Novice users may not understand some of the available options. Phoner enables you to call your friends, on their phones, from the comforts of your PC. It works like a real-life phone, but it offers many more features.
